CHAPTER TWELVE

DUNCAN

I was on edge when I watched Winter leave, clutching Dahlia to her chest like if she let go for even a second, the precious little girl would disappear. I growled under my breath, turning away once she was out of sight.

I liked to think of myself as being a patient man, and slow to anger, but my overwhelming desire to take care of Winter, to protect and provide for her and defend her from all harm, made rage rise in me. I stalked away from Rob without a word, chasing the scent of that insolent bear cub that had made Winter react so badly.

I only knew the bare details, of course, only what Winter had told me. Tyler was the father of her baby, and he'd up and left while she was still pregnant. That was enough for me to hate him. He claimed he hadn't known, but I was determined to figure that part out for myself.

I might have forgiven him that, if he hadn't immediately demanded that he be given Dahlia so he could take her away. She wasn't even shifting yet and he wanted to put her in a dome or out into the wilderness where she would most certainly die. It was selfish and shortsighted and utterly unforgiveable.

The three didn't have much of a head start and I caught up with them quickly. "Tyler!" I barked, making him whirl on me. He was carrying several crates, as were his companions. He set them down and leveled me with an angry look, immediately shifting into an aggressive stance in preparation to fight. "You and I need to talk."

"What's there to talk about?" Tyler demanded. "You pissed because I got there first?"

"You listen to me," I said, slowing just outside of lunging distance and pointing a finger at him. "You have no right to come and claim a cub that you abandoned. Winter's fucking terrified of you."

"She shouldn't be scared of me," Tyler replied. I did see, though, for just an instant, a flint-strike of surprise and hesitation. It faded quickly, and Tyler drew in a breath. "She has you to protect her now, anyway." His lips twisted into a bitter, smug smirk that I wanted to punch right off his face. "You picked a good one. She's fuckin' wild in the sack."

I knew he was trying to bait me, so I refused to rise to it. Even still, the thought of this arrogant cub putting his hands on Winter made my upper lip twitch. I wasn't a jealous person, and even now I didn't think I could call what I was feeling jealousy. It was closer to outrage, that Tyler was being so crass and didn't seem to care that he had upset her at all. "You need to keep to your clan and stay away from her," I snapped.

"You're the one who chased me, Duncan," Tyler said.

I glared at him, and sighed. There was no point pressing the issue. I was outnumbered, this time, though I doubted the female and younger bear could do much damage.
